HeadHeartLaw partnered with aspiring attorney Tsogo Rampolokeng from Mahikeng to start a community legal advice office. We provided a computer and office furniture to the advice office. Follow-up support will be given in the form of legal advice and fundraising.

In a remote rural area in Northern South Africa a small group tried to protest against the activities of one of SOUTH AFRICA’S LARGEST MINING HOUSES. The company applied to court for an interdict to restrain the activists. With no financial resources to pay legal bills, and only a sketchy understanding of the complicated language in the documents served on them, it seemed that the activists were set to lose the match on an uneven playing field. HeadHeartLaw secured top quality legal representation for them and their lawyers are opposing the application.

HeadHeartLaw has been monitoring the activities of two MINING COMPANIES which has reportedly transgress environmental regulations. We have submitted a PAIA (Promotion of Access to Information Act) application to the Department of Mineral Resources. We are currently lobbying for improved enforcement of the environmental regulatory regime around the activities of this mine.

HeadHeartLaw intervened in a court case between a REAL ESTATE DEVELOPER and an environmental organisation, fundraising a substantial sum for legal representation and advice. The matter was settled out of court by a community mediation process.

HeadHeartLaw submitted a complaint to the Press Ombud about a newspaper which published a column DENYING CLIMATE CHANGE without declaring the writer’s links to a PR company representing global oil interests. The Ombud ruled in favour of the newspaper, citing freedom of expression. In the United States, the judiciary is starting to become aware of a trend of oil companies using PR companies as front organisations that supply content to media free of charge.

HeadHeartLaw facilitates FREE WORKSHOPS where community organisations with legal problems are advised by senior counsel.

While MASIPHUMELELE erupted into protest and vigilante violence following the rape of a child, HeadHeartLaw accompanied the mother of a different child who was raped at the same time on her search for justice through the court system. The perpetrator was caught and sentenced to five years in jail.

Colette won an award for her paper on land reform at the 2013 ISMAIL MAHOMED LAW REFORM ESSAY COMPETITION.
